Developing technologies to drive future growth
Caltex established the R&D Center in 1986. The center has developed core technologies in diverse areas to sharpen our competitive edge and nurture future growth drivers. The R&D Center is focused on the development of high value-added products in the petroleum, petrochemical and polymer materials sectors in addition to technologies to increase productivity.
They also conduct analysis that helps maintain operation of existing businesses. The R&D center is working on core technologies related to catalysts, polymerization and polymer products to reinforce the competitiveness in the olefin business what is launched recently. We also try to pursue developments in the biochemicals technology and products. The R&D Center will continue efforts in product and technology development to maintain growth at GS Caltex.
Research Overview
Bio-based chemical R&D
GS Caltex has continued to invest in biochemical research to nurture future growth engines. Thanks to these investments, we have made headway related to microorganism, fermentation, separation/purification and other related technologies.
Bio-based chemicals development
We are currently producing a 2,3-Butanediol/1,3-Propanediol and continuing to discover market needs for white-bio chemicals in cosmetics, personal care and agriculture sectors.
In addition, research is being conducted to develop biochemicals to respond to the market demand. We will harness our biochemical development technologies to make further advances.
Polymer∙Catalyst R&D
GS Caltex R&D Center is developing technologies to produce polymer products that meet customer needs. We are actively developing PE/PP products for various purposes (film, pipe) as well as catalyst technology for downstream products in petrochemicals.

Polymer composite products development
GS Caltex R&D Center is conducting research on improving and imparting physical properties such as strength, rigidity, chemical resistance, and heat resistance by mixing various materials, such as PP. Polymer composites are primarily used in automotive parts and home appliances, as well as in various other industries such as construction materials and cosmetic packaging.
Waste plastic recycling
GS Caltex's R&D Center is conducting research on waste plastic recycling for sustainable and profitable growth in the lower carbon business. In particular, the R&D center is concentrating on production of polymer composite using mechanical recycling.
Energy·Petroleum Technology R&D
Based on technology accumulated in the refinery and petrochemical sectors, GS Caltex R&D Center is carrying out R&D to reinforce the current energy business and discover lower carbon product. Its efforts are being directed to develop various crude oil processing techniques, improve energy efficiency & reliability in refinery process, enhance quality of petroleum products, and develop lower carbon, high performance asphalt & lubricants. Also, we aim to pursue sustainable growth in the energy sector by strengthening capabilities such as core technologies in biofuel production, hydrogen value chain and CCU (Carbon Capture & Utilization) to respond to changes in low carbon energy policies and secure company's future growth engines.
